Bitches Makin’ Stiches Event

We’ve always envisioned Don’t Ask, Do as a movement that included live, hands-on classes. Hosting our first in-person class, Bitches Makin’ Stitches, was truly a do-er dream come true for us. Eighteen enthusiastic (and slightly buzzed) students joined us for a sewing machine workshop, and showed off their new skills by making the most darlin’ lil’ totes you ever did see!

Since Jenn and I both love a theme (don’t ask about the Dolly Parton Halloween of 2016), we decided to cook a meal that would pay homage to one of my homelands, New Zealand. My father was born in the former Czechoslovakia, but was forced to leave as a young boy during World War II. Luckily, his family was granted asylum as political refugees, sponsored by a group of Quakers in Wellington. When I look back at pictures of my Czech family in the Land of the Long White Cloud, I think about how terrifying it must have been to arrive in a country they knew absolutely nothing about. Today, as I try to wrap my head around the staggering fact that there are 65.3 million displaced people in the world, I’m thankful that a small country in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (filled with 4 times more sheep than people) placed their humanity over their borders.

Jenn and I tried our best to recreate uniquely Kiwi dishes (she even brought back two bags of Eskimo lolly candy from her honeymoon in NZ...that’s dedication!), as a culinary challenge for ourselves. It’s easy to do what’s safe; to cook the standby dishes, do the rote tasks without trying something new or challenging, but that’s not how we grow.

Every day we strive to try something new, to do something a different way, to challenge our own assumptions about what we are capable of. Even if we fail, the doing helps us grow.

As Guidance Counselors, it made us so proud to see a group of do-ers ready to tackle a new project.

This is the heart of what Don’t Ask, Do is really about; surprising yourself with your own capacity to grow through learning. Ready for the next class? We sure are...
